Perched high above The Villages, where golden
eagles soar
Sit thirty-six homes on the Drive, on the Loop thirty-six more
Between that Drive and curvy Loop, a sudden rift was torn
And in a DAC-induced fatigue, a bitter feud was born
Our hero at Foothill Center paused beside the entry
door
“Which side?” the greeter hissed at him, “You must choose now, for war!
The Drivers claim the high ground, the Loopers claim the grace
Pick your tribe and find your chair or leave this meeting place”
The leader of the Drivers stood tall and began to
crow
“Without our asphalt artery, Loopers could not come or go
You’d be on an island, no one could hear you shout
A lonely group of losers with no way in or out
Trapped forever, spinning, in a loop that’s not quite round
While we’re the spine of Valle Vista, solid, straight, and sound”
The leader of the Loopers rose up and gave a
haughty sneer
“You Drivers live on nothing but a road to nowhere, dear
Your street just peters out at last, a feeble, dead-end sight
While we embrace our lovely park in curves of pure delight
We flow in graceful symmetry, a circuit of the best
While you’re a stagnant boring line, to pity and detest”
The insults flew like golf balls sliced into the
valley haze
Two tribes of thirty-six abodes, trapped in a tribal maze
They argued views and dumpster counts and visitor parking spots
Who had better shrubbery, who had larger lots
A snore! A twitch! Our hero awoke, his chin upon
his chest
To find the warring factions seated peacefully, at rest
No Drivers and no Loopers aligned in angry, split-side rows
Just neighbors sharing peppermints and rubbing sleepy toes
The great divide was nothing but a dreamy stream
of prose
Born of a meeting long enough to make an old soul doze
For too long they’d been arguing, a struggle quite contrary
The legendary “Rosemary Wars” because it’s flammable and scary
Their Poet Laureate took the mic, a ditty in his
hand
To mock the shrubs and fire codes that polarized the land
Drivers and Loopers, side-by-side, enjoyed their minstrel’s labors
Waiting for the wine and cheese and shmoozing with their neighbors
